There are some simple tips that every grandma knows but was too scared of the internet, and computers, to tell everyone. Great homemade soups are becoming a thing of the past and the Progresso's of the world are bringing in the reigns on peoples efforts to whip up a nice big pot of homemade chicken soup. I am going to give a few simple tips that will make your soup a success!

Sugar Free & Low Sodium Cheescake

One of my favorite deserts is Cheesecake. Whenever I am in a restaurant and they are displaying a nice cheesecake, )it is hard for me to pass up a piece. Oh I know all the reasons I should eat any and how its sugar and salt can actually make me sick but come on folks, we are talking cheesecake! Especially if it is one of those nice New York Cheesecakes. Well I think we came up with a pretty good substitute recipe. It is sugar free and very low sodium. Still fattening but I guess on a holiday maybe we can overlook that a bit.

Holiday Nut Roll

Are you looking for a recipe for some of that good old fashion holiday pastry like mom use to make. Once a year mom would get out rolling pin and bakery bowls and the house would be filled with the scent of great holiday bakery treats. Just thinking about it I can smell the cookies, nuts, poppy seed, and cinnamon treats as they spent their time in our oven. Check out our recipe for the Christmas Holiday Nut Roll in our Favorite Christmas Recipe category and you will find some of those great recipes adapted for a lower sodium content.

A Ramen Noodle Wanna Be A Low Sodium Solution

Just before I was diagnosed with CHF (Congestive Heart Failure) I thought I was suffering from a severe chest cold. I was so congested I would have to sleep on my knees leaning over the couch, it was the only way I could breath at night. I went on this way for probably over a week and in my stubbornness I just refused to go to the hospital, hoping and praying I would get over this bad chest cold.

Low Sodium Dessert Pudding Pops Only 25 Calories A Pop

Looking for a way to enjoy a nice summer treat? How about aprox 25 calories for a nice sweet treat! If you have some popsicle sticks around or better yet a popsicle tray that you can make your own popsicles in, try making them with sugar free pudding. You’ll have a wide assortment over the standard chocolate or vanilla. there is nothing like a nice sugar free cheese cake pudding pop or a pistachio flavored treat! Watch the sodium level on the package and make sure you divide into the number of pops you make.

Restricting Fluids

Here is another idea if you have CHF or another problem that requires you to restrict your fluid intake. Me personally, I should not have more then 2 liters of fluid a day. I get thirsty and have an ice tea or a hot tea, a coke, some water, piece a fruit or whatever and before you know it my 2 liters gone. Recently I have found it a help to keep my favorite drink in a small container in the refrigerator instead of taking a glassful. For example, I love the Lipton Diet Green Tea so I keep one of their 16 ounce bottles cold in the refrigerator with the screw on cap.

Flavored Water or Juice Drink Idea

Thought I'd share today a favorite of mine. We will kill about three birds with one stone here. This is a low sodium Low Cal treat and/or drink I think you'll love. Start with a can of  fruit. Use your favorite, canned peaches, pears, pineapple or a combination of them. Make sure they are packed in water and/or concentrate but do not use the canned fruits in heavy syrup. Put the fruit in a bowl and eat it but save the juice from the can.  In a one quart pitcher or jug add the juice, water, a teaspoon of lemon  concentrate and 2 to 3 TBS. of a sugar substitute such as equal.

Finding a Good Support Group

It is so important to locate support in your recovery from a serious heart disease, support in a life changing diet and through most any traumatic experience you may go through. Although, Low Sodium Living has offered a limited amount of information of support groups since our beginnings, we would like to greatly increase that service.

Please help us by posting a comment if you are aware of support groups for heart patients, dieters, etc in your area!
